Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike

This was the brainchild of universities of the military era in the early 90s. Specifically, in 1992, decree number 48 ratified its establishment.

It was formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike and official activities commenced in May 1993 with the appointment of the Vice Chancellor at the time, Professor Placid C. Njoku on May 27, 1993.

Abia State University, Uturu

In 1981, Abia State University was also known as Imo State University, Etiti. Presently, it is the only state-owned university in Abia State. ABSU, as they are also known, is one of those universities in Abia State that are staunch believers of education that empowers individuals to public service and excellence.

This particular university is named after Pope Gregory and was established in 2012. Gregory University currently has over thirty departments and about eight colleges.

Rhema University

Rhema University is one of the private universities in Abia State. It was established by Living Word Ministries International. Rhema University was accredited by the National Universities Council (NUC) in 2009.

Clifford University, Owerrinta, Abia State

Clifford University is yet another private university in Abia State. It was founded by the Seventh Day Adventist Church in 2013. Clifford University is named after the British missionary who brought Adventism to the eastern part of Nigeria in 1923. Currently, Clifford University is the 144th tertiary institution owned by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Spiritan University, Nneochi, Abia State

Most private universities in Abia State were established by churches. Spiritan University is not an exception. It is a Catholic-owned university with Spiritans tradition. Spiritan University was established by the members of the congregation of the Holy Ghost (Spiritans), Province of Nigeria, South East. On December 6, they received the seal of approval from the Federal government through the National Universities Council.
