Full List of Universities in Ondo State
In this article, we will discover the number of universities in Ondo State. In the southwestern region, there are six states, and one of them is Ondo State.
Presently, there are seven universities in Ondo State. Among these seven, one is a federal university, three are state universities, and the other three, are private universities.
List of Universities in Ondo State
Federal University of Technology, Akure
The Federal University of Technology, Akure is believed to be one of the oldest universities of technology in Nigeria. Since its inception in 1981, FUTA has grown in leaps and bounds, having as many as eight schools and fifty academic departments.
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba
Among the three state-owned universities in Ondo State, Adekunle Ajasin University has some interesting history around its creation. In 1982, Adekunle Ajasin University was established as Obafemi Awolowo University, but it was until three years down the line that its name was changed to Ondo State University.
Fast-forward to 1999, when the university was relocated to Akungba, and was then changed to its present name. Currently, AAUA has seven faculties and offers a variety of programs ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate, pre-degree, and even JUPEB.
Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa
Formerly known as the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology is one of the few state universities in Ondo State. It began its academic session in full swing in 2011, three years after its inception under the then-governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu. It was renamed the Olusegun Agagu University in 2020 in honor of the pioneering efforts of the governor.
Ondo State University of Medical Sciences
As you may have guessed, this particular state university is focused on courses related to the medical profession, namely: Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Dentistry, Medical Laboratory Science, and Physiotherapy.
Achievers University, Owo
What started as the Achievers Group of Education and Training Organization which was owned at the time by Dr. Bode Ayorinde morphed into Achievers University. In 2013, the private university was ranked 53rd in annual rankings released by the National Universities Council.
However, it must be said that in 2012, Achievers University was among the seven private universities that lost their operating licenses.
Wesley University, Ondo
This Ondo-based university started as Wesley University of Science and Technology in Ondo town, Ondo State. It was established by the Methodist Church of Nigeria in 2007, but it was only a year later that the school opened its door to students.
Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin
You can’t mention private universities in Ondo State, and Elizade University won’t surface. It was established by Micheal Ojo and is divided into five faculties namely: the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, the Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Engineering.
Conclusion
As we have read, there are a good number of universities in Ondo State that are worth their salt in every way. So, if you are interested in schooling in the southwestern part of Nigeria, then any of the universities in Ondo State is a good option.
