As of the time of writing, some of the best universities of technology in Nigeria are considered to be miles ahead of the other universities that don’t specialize in any course, whether federal or private universities when it comes to technology-related courses like architecture, building technology, agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering and so on.

Surprisingly, these universities of technology in Nigeria are a mix of private, state, and even federal universities, and over the years over shown to be the best place to get some of the best technology talents in the country.

Federal University of Technology, Owerri

If you are to make a list of the first three universities of technology in Nigeria that the Federal government wanted to establish in each geopolitical zone, then FUTO easily gets a shout. This is because as far back as 1980 during the military regime of Ernest Shonekan, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri opened its doors for admission to students.

FUTO is located in the south of the Imo State capital, Owerri, and is surrounded by a good number of independent communities like Obinze, Umuoma, Avu, Nekede, and others. The southeastern university is made up of eleven colleges and one directorate.

Federal University of Technology, Minna

The Niger-based university is also one of the oldest universities of technology in Nigeria. The school is a product of the concerted efforts of the government to produce innovations across the science, technology, and engineering field.

And, so far since its inception in 1983, the school has shown commitment to providing a skilled workforce that can transform Nigeria’s natural resources to boost the economy. As of the time of writing, FUTMINNA has ten faculties.

Enugu State University of Technology

ESUT as they are fondly called is one of the state universities that are among the top universities of technology in Nigeria. It was first known as the Anambra State University of Technology in 1980, before adopting its present name. 

In the southeast, Enugu State University of Technology is considered one of the best universities of technology, and with its nine faculties that include both science and non-science courses, it isn’t hard to see why.

Cross River State University of Technology

CRUTECH is a combination of three different schools, namely: The Polytechnic, Calabar, The College of Education, Akamkpa, and the Ibrahim Babaginda College of Agriculture, Ovonum. All three schools were owned by the Cross River State government at the time till they were merged in August 2002.

Cross River State University of Technology has eight faculties which are: Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Communication Technology, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, and Faculty of Management Sciences.

Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa

The southwestern university went by the name, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, before in 2010, it was changed to its present name. Since then, Ondo State University of Science and Technology, has gone one to be one of the go-to universities of technology in Nigeria for students who wish to study technology-related courses.

Rivers State University of Science and Technology

By virtue of its pacesetting educational standards, Rivers State University of Science and Technology is surely one of the top universities of technology in Nigeria. Presently, the Niger Delta institution has a student population of nearly 30,000 with seven faculties which include: Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Science and Technical Education, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management Sciences, and Faculty of Sciences

Bells University of Technology, Ota

Having received its license to offer technology-related courses in Nigeria, Bells University of Technology, Ota became the first private university of technology in Nigeria in 2005. The idea of a university can be traced to the Bells Educational Foundation that was setup to give solid tertiary education to the products of Bells Secondary School.

Presently, Bells University has four colleges which are: College of Engineering, College of Management Sciences, College of Environmental Sciences and College of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho 

LAUTECH is one of the few federal institutions that is jointly owned by two state governments, and in this case, Oyo and Osun State government. The university runs three academic programmes which are: pre-degree science programmes, undergraduate programmes and postgraduate programmes.

Apart from its excellent academic status that compelled the National Universities Council to adjudge the school as the best state university in Nigeria in 2003 and 2004, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology has one of best university library in the country.

Federal University of Technology, Akure

Another school that makes it as one of the best universities of technology, is the Ondo-based university, Federal University of Technology, Akure. It was established in 1981 by the Federal government with the aim of arming graduates with both theoretical and practical knowledge.

At the time of this writing, FUTA has nine colleges, some of them are: School of Computing, School of Management Technology, School of Earth and Mineral Sciences, School of Environmental Technology and the others.

Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola

You might quip that this particular school is a relatively unheard name when it comes to the best universities of technology in Nigeria, nonetheless, its high academic standards is undisputed. It was established in 1981 by the Federal government, and it is located in the Adamawa state’s capital, Yola. 

MAUTECH has eight faculties which are: School of Engineering, School of Environmental Sciences, School of General Studies, School of Life Sciences, School of Management and Information Technology, School of Physical Sciences, School of Technology and Science Education.
