For an oil-producing state, there are many universities in Imo State. And, just like the Nigeria Delta which is an oil-rich state, Imo State is also one of the most educated states in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, there are six geo-political zones, Imo State belongs to the southeast zone which is an Igbo-speaking state. It is also home to one of the most popular rivers in Nigeria, the Imo River.

There are six universities in Imo State, one of them is owned and managed by the Federal government, and two are owned by the Imo State government. The remaining three are private universities.

Federal University of Technology, Owerri

The first technology university established in Nigeria is the Federal University of Technology, Owerri making it one of the go-to universities for students who wish to study engineering. Since its inception in 1980 under the tenure of Nigeria’s first executive president, Shehu Shagari.

FUTO as they fondly called it is surrounded by independent communities which have contributed to part of the university’s land. These communities are Avu, Eziobodo, Ihiagwa, Umuoma, and Nekede. The Otamiri River transverses the permanent site of the university.

Imo State University

Located in the State’s Capital, Owerri, Imo State University was established in 1981 with the mission of pursuing academic excellence. Since its inception when law no. 4 was passed by the Imo State House of Assembly, and IMSU has shown a strong commitment to that vision.

Imo State University was known as Evan Ewerem University, albeit, unofficially.

Eastern Palm University, Ogboko

Eastern Palm University is one of the state-owned universities in Imo State. Established under the Imo State law No. 13 of 2016, Eastern Palm University was approved by the National Universities Council in 2016 and since then, it has grown to be a world-class university where excellence is the mainstay in its educational practices.

EPU also is famed for its unique education that furnishes students with theoretical and contemporary knowledge essential for solving societal problems. In pursuing this, the university has kept in touch with the global best practices as advised by the NUC.

Hezekiah University, Umudi

Hezekiah University is one of the three private universities in Imo State. The Living Christ Mission Incorporation-owned university was licensed by the Federal Government of Nigeria in May 2015. The idea of the university which was birthed in 2004 was a result of the issue of limited access to university education.

Hezekiah University has two campuses amassing a land area of 13.1 hectares per land. Both campuses are located at Nkwerre Local Government Area in Imo State.

Claretian University of Nigeria, Nekede

Founded by the Claretian Missionaries of the Roman Catholic Church of Nigeria, Claretian University is one of the private universities in Imo State. The university’s vision was to support the Imo State government’s drive for better tertiary education.

Students of the Claretian University of Nigeria have access to a vast range of opportunities that their counterparts in the west African region don’t have.

Maranatha University, Mgbidi

Among the other universities in Imo State, Maranatha University has a peculiar feature that distinguishes them. This peculiarity is in line with the dreams and visions of the university. 

Located on Oguta road, Imo State which is accessible both by road and air, Maranatha University is one of the Christian faith-based universities in the country that combines good morals and academic excellence.
