Full List of Universities in Nasarawa State

There are a good number of universities in Nasarawa state. While this is strange since Nasarawa is found in the Northern region, its closeness to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja may just have played a part in the concentration of universities in Nasarawa state.

In the following paragraphs, we will be outlining the universities in Nasarawa state. By the way, there are five universities in Nasarawa state. One is a federal university, another is a state university, and the remaining three, are private universities.

Federal University, Lafia

In response to the need for swift socio-economic development especially in underdeveloped regions, the Federal government in 2011 established the Federal University, Lafia, and eight other universities. 

The university began academic activities at its first campus, Obi Road, Lafia which served as the former State Secretariat Complex. In fact, it was those former buildings of the Nasarawa state government that were used as offices and classrooms.

It wasn’t until 2018 that the university moved to its permanent site at Lafia-Makurdi road. The name, Federal University, Lafia was adopted on June 20, 2019. The proprietor of the Federal University, Lafia is the federal government, while the visitor is the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Nasarawa State University, Keffi

NSUK, also Nasarawa State University was established to provide tertiary education for the residents of Nasarawa. It was formerly known as the College of Arts, Science ad Technology, Keffi until it was changed to its present name, Nasarawa State University, Keffi in 2001 under the governor at the time, Dr. Abdullahi Adamu.

Nasarawa State University offers a part-time, full-time undergraduate education and postgraduate education in business administration.

Bingham University, Karu

Bingham University was established in 2005 by the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA). It is one of the universities in Nasarawa State, located 25 kilometers from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The major reason ECWA for creation of Bingham University is to provide top-notch quality tertiary education that integrates moral and spiritual values in the training of the human mind in a particular profession.

Since its inception, Bingham University has had four different Vice-Chancellors with the very first Vice-Chancellor being Professor Aaron Gana. He was succeeded by Professor Felix Anjorin.

Universities in Nasarawa State

Ave Maria University, Piyanko

This is one of the three private universities in Nasarawa State. It was established by the Ave Maria Foundation which has a group of schools ranging from Ave Maria Nursery and Primary School, Nyanya, Ave Maria Boys Secondary School, Nyanya Ave Maria Girls Secondary School, Jikwoyi.

Ave Maria University, Piyanko offers programs and courses in the areas of humanities, arts, basic science, and social management science. The university also has facilities for both academic and non-academic activities including library service, housing, online courses, and distance learning opportunities.

Mewar International University, Masaka

MIU, also known as Mewar International University is the first Indian university in Africa. Across different industries from business to law, Mewar International University aims at producing the best graduates. Even though MIU is located in an African country, the school still retains its Maharaja roots. 

Being a private university, they have some of the best minds in different fields of endeavors as their lecturers. The university also provides a wide range of opportunities such as International Learning classes, International Exchange Programs, and internships.
